Nothing Stays Still

“Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.” Karen Kaiser Clark

There are certain times in your life when big things happen and you know that you will never forget that moment. Some of those moments for me in my life are meeting my husband, our wedding day, and the births of our children. Those are just a few on my list though, so many other moments in my 33 years flash through my mind as amazing memories and such important life changing moments for me. 10 1/2 years ago my husband and I made a huge life changing decision for our family. Our son was only a few months old and our only daughter (at that time) was almost 2 and a 1/2. We decided that it would be the best choice for our family for me to quit working outside of the home and be at home to raise our children. The problem with that, was we needed my income to survive. I did everything in my power to make money to make ends meet so that I could stay at home with our babies. While I was at home I ran an in-home daycare business, worked for various work at home companies, and did some freelance writing. Once our youngest child started kindergarten, I started to think about working at a school. I figured that would be the best job for me. I would have the same hours and vacation as the kids. What could be better than that? Towards the end of the 2008-2009 school year I was hired on as a part-time employee at my kids’ elementary school. I was only part-time, so every year at the end of the school year I had to be patient and wait until the next school year was about to start to know if I had a job for the upcoming school year or not. Every year I worked hard, and went over and above in my duties to try to prove my worth. I also made known my desire and need for a full-time position with the school. After 3 full years of waiting, I started to wonder if I would ever be chosen for a full-time position. I knew that many other people had seniority over me, and that I would just have to be patient and wait for my time. Then one day I got a text from a good friend.

The text asked me if I would be interested in a full time job somewhere other than at the school. But to me, all it said was “Change ahead.” My friend had connections at this company and specifically with this job and she knew it would be the perfect fit for me. The more she told me the better it sounded. I couldn’t make any moves right away though, I had to talk to my husband first. It was Friday and I figured we would discuss it and really think about it over the weekend and then call on Monday if we felt like it was the right  move for us. Larry thought differently though. All he kept telling me was “do not wait”, “call them”, “do not hesitate”, so I called my friend back and got all of the information on who to call. The phone call went well and I was asked to come in for an interview on the following Tuesday.

Over the next few day, I did everything humanly possible to prepare for my big interview. I updated my resume, I found the perfect outfit, I worried about every minute detail … I was truly going insane. Everyone I talked to try to calm me down and tell me that I just needed to remember my experience and work ethic and believe in myself. They told me the main thing I needed to focus on wasn’t this one interview, it was the choice that we made to make a change. Our kids are older now and we felt like it was the right time to transition back into the ‘normal’ workplace again.

Tuesday came and I was more nervous than I ever remember being in my life. I was trying to figure out a good way to calm myself down as well as pump me up for the interview.  That’s when it hit me. Music has been such a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. So I made a new playlist on Itunes. Each song on the cd was calming, inspiring, or motivating in some way to me. Here is what went on the playlist, and then onto a cd for my car.

1. Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5, because I am amazing and have the moves like Jagger.

2. Drop it Like it’s Hot by Snoop Dogg, because it is such a mellow and fun song and I had to go into the interview and drop everything I had on the table.

3. Shake It Out by Florence and the Machine, because I needed to stop letting my fears hold me back from making big changes in my life.

4. SexyBack by Justin Timberlake, this song always makes me feel so empowered, so I had to include it on my list.

5. The Climb by Miley Cyrus, the lyrics in this song are so moving and inspirational!

6. Strong by Kanye West, because if I can do this, I can do anything!

7. Stronger by Kelly Clarkson, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?!

8. Billionaire by Travie McCoy, let’s face it … the reason behind just about any job comes down to money.

9. Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer, such a feel good song for me!

10. Firework by Katy Perry, to remind me to go in and shine like the star that I know I am.

11. Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked, because everyone deserves a chance to fly!

12. Dog Days are Over by Florence and the Machine, because if I get the job it would mean the end of a lot of different stresses in our lives.

13. Home by Phillip Phillips, this song just relaxes all of my muscles and makes me smile.

I listened to this cd the entire way to the interview. I pulled into the parking lot and parked and took a deep breath before I got out of my car. I told myself “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it people like me!” I felt like the interview went REALLY well. I was in the interview for almost 2 hours. The next few days were all about me trying to stay busy. I took the kids to camp, we went swimming, we went shopping, we got haircuts, we did lunch out, anything to keep us busy and keep my mind off of waiting. Then on Friday afternoon at 1:00 we were getting my son’s hair cut and my cell phone rang. I recognized the number immediately. It was the future calling.

They offered me the job and ask me if I could start on Monday morning. One week before I was unemployed and wondering how we would make ends meet all Summer. I was wondering if I would be lucky enough to get an interview for a full-time job at the school. I had a one track mind, work at the school was all I considered. Then a simple talk with a friend and everything changed.  Now I have a full-time job, benefits and endless possibilities.

When something comes at you that mean big changes, don’t dismiss it just because change scares you. Weigh your options and see if you can make those changes and make this big change work for you. That’s what we did and now we are looking forward to what all this new adventure brings our way.
